Grow
Your Yield
Many times, securities carry exorbitant yields due to rapidly
falling share prices -- after all, yield and price move inversely.
But by investing in securities with strong dividend growth, you can have
both high yields and capital appreciation, which means big returns.
Cadbury
Schweppes -- A Sweet Defensive Stock for Value Investors
London-based Cadbury Schweppes
(NYSE: CSG) may not be as familiar to American investors as it is to
those on the other side of the Atlantic. However, that lack of
recognition can often work to the advantage of value hunters. Read
this article to see why CSG is a solid stock trading well below its fair
value.
Carrying
MasterCard Could be Good for Your Portfolio
As an
investment, MasterCard (NYSE: MA) has it all -- strong growth trends,
wide economic moats, and even a presence in China. This stock may be
just the fit for your portfolio.
How
to Steer Clear of "Value Traps"
How can you differentiate between a value stock and a "value
trap"? This is often the most important dilemma that value
investors must consider. Finding a way to separate the two can mean the
difference between earning extraordinary returns and suffering
devastating losses. Here are several attributes we look for in a
compelling value stock.
A
Cooling Housing Market Leaves This REIT Yielding Over 20%
The softening housing market has hit mortgage lenders hard --
leaving many with attractive valuations and high yields. New Century, in particular, may be interesting to income
investors with its low P/E ratio and 20%+ dividend yield.
Consumer
Staples: Steady Growth Does Not Mean Boring Returns
But don't be tempted to simply generalize consumer staples as a
slow-growing, defensive group to hide in when the market is going down.
While there are certainly companies that fit the bill, there are also a
handful of standouts with a track record of growing faster than their
industry, developing innovative high-growth products, and expanding into
new markets.

Louisiana-Pacific
Trades Almost 45% Below
its Fair Value
The cooling housing market has battered the stocks of most homebuilders
lately. We are closely monitoring this sector for signs of a potential
turnaround, and there is one stock now trading at a huge discount --
Louisiana-Pacific.
This
Safe Fund Yields Over 9%
If you are looking for a well-rounded, conservative fund, then the Zweig
Total Return Fund may be just the thing. With investments in high-grade
bonds and blue-chip stocks, income investors are able to diversify their
portfolio and still receive a phenomenal yield.
A
Different Way to Profit from the Healthcare Industry
When it comes to investing in the
healthcare industry, most investors think of pharmaceutical and biotech
stocks. Although these firms play an important role, modern healthcare
is a complex business that also involves an array of supplies and
services. Companies that specialize in this aspect of the industry can
offer stable revenues and little risk, yet still offer exposure to a
lucrative field.
Income
Trust or Not, BCE Deserves a Second Look
Canada's largest telecom
provider, BCE, soared on news that the company planned to convert to a high-yielding income trust. However, following the Canadian government's legislative bombshell, the shares have returned to their previous trading range.
Whether an income trust or not, BCE should interest investors.
POOL's
Growing Dominance Means Big Gains for
Investors
Pool Corp. has grown from a tiny one store operation to a company
with more than 275 service centers. Profits have followed the same
trajectory by increasing more than +2000% over the last ten years. Now
POOL garners 50% market share and is poised for more growth.
Recent
IPOs With Strong Growth and Profitability
Newly-formed businesses generally have the greatest potential to expand
and grow -- such firms have only just begun to probe their potential
market. As a result, most successful companies deliver the strongest
growth in their early years of existence. Our list of promising IPOs
gives you several young companies that should soon see explosive growth
in the coming years.
Use
Credit Cards to Make Money Rather Than Spend it
Today, credit cards can be used anywhere from department
stores to fast-food restaurants. In fact, it is hard to remember a time
when you couldn't simply enter a few digits to buy an item online. Learn
how you can get your cut of this multi-billion dollar industry.
October 2006
Waste
Management (WMI) is No Waste For Investors
In late October, trash hauler Waste Management posted across-the-board
third-quarter improvements. Clearly, the company looks to close out
fiscal 2006 on a high note, which should help WMI extend its recent
upward march and move closer to our $54 fair-value estimate.
An Easy Way to Capitalize on Sizzling Foreign Markets
There has been a lot of press
recently about the major U.S. averages reaching new milestones. However,
a number of foreign countries have delivered superior
returns compared to the U.S. markets. Here is how you can get a piece of
the action.
Starbucks
(SBUX) Plans Store Growth of Nearly +250%
Starbucks newest long-term target is to open 40,000 stores worldwide.
With only 12,000 current locations, SBUX is far from saturating the
market.
Cash
Cows: Great Companies with 10%-Plus Dividend Yields
If your portfolio isn't delivering both capital gains and a steady
flow of cash income each year, then you're missing out on these
great opportunities. In this report we'll bring you an in-depth
look at several proven income stocks that offer abnormally high
dividend yields of at least 10%. |
A
Lesson Every Investor Should Know
Building an efficient portfolio is much more of a qualitative challenge
than a quantitative one. Some investors might be well-positioned with
less than twenty stocks, while others could hold over a hundred and
still be susceptible to extreme volatility. To maximize one's
risk/reward profile, an investor needs exposure to a broad cross-section
of different industries and asset classes.
AMD's
Chinese Market Share Has Quadrupled and Shows No Signs of Slowing
Three years ago, rival Intel (INTC) enjoyed a near monopoly in
China, but AMD continues to make substantial inroads into the country --
projected by many to become the world's leading PC market within the
next few years.
Increased
Trade Means Increased Profits
Los Angeles is best known as the center of the global entertainment
industry. And certainly, Hollywood's film industry is a global behemoth.
But the Southern California city is also host to a lower-profile
industry that carries arguably even more importance for the U.S.
economy.
This
Stock Carries a Phenomenal 16.6% Yield
Shares of oil tanker stock Frontline (NYSE: FRO) are starting to
rebound. After bottoming out at around $30 per share in May, the shares
have gained over +30% in the past few months. Despite the rise, the
stock still carries a monster yield of 16.6% based on Frontline's $6.00
per share dividend.
Boyd
Gaming (BYD) Looks Enticing
Among those that don't closely track the casino industry, Boyd
Gaming is probably not a household name. But to Boyd's growth strategy,
that is rapidly changing.-*
The
Pantry (PTRY) Has Some Juice
There are few industries as fragmented as the convenience store market.
The National Association of Convenience Stores estimates that there are
140,655 such stores in the U.S., delivering total annual sales of just
under $500 billion. Many of these are one-off locations and there are
very few large, multi-state chains. The Pantry is aiming to change that.
Are
Managed Distribution Policies Right For You?
What could be wrong with buying a fund with a "managed"
distribution policy? After all, this policy is a promise to pay you a
fixed amount every month or quarter. But this promise isn't always as
nice as you might think.

Best
Dividend Reinvestment Plans in America
If you'd like to emulate Warren Buffett, whose favorite
holding period is "infinity," then DRIPs are the way to
go. They make it easy to be an automatic, disciplined investor in
a fluctuating market, so that -- just as with dollar-cost
averaging -- you wind up with more shares for your money. |
Bargain
Hunting Applies to the Stock Market Too
If you pay close attention to prices when you spend your money, you
should be even more vigilant when investing it. Curiously, our
thought process is suddenly reversed when it comes to investing and the
price of a stock usually plays second fiddle to other measures.
Considering an investment portfolio can often represent someone's largest
single asset, this is clearly not the time to disregard prices.
Capture
Yields of Nearly 10% by Investing in Income Deposit Securities
Income deposit securities are a little-known asset class that is
generating large returns...and yields. With only four of these
securities in existence, the rare stock/bond hybrid is treating
investors kindly.
Orleans
Homebuilders (OHB) and Other Housing Stocks Continue to Sink
Like most homebuilders, Orleans Homebuilders (OHB) has been hit hard
over the past few months. A few months ago, most investors seemed
willing to believe the real estate market would slow in an orderly
fashion; recently, some pundits have been calling for an outright
collapse and bust. Extremes of sentiment such as this often provide
investors with excellent buying opportunities
Lock

Italian energy giant Enel (EN) generates nearly half of Italy's
electricity and holds an interest in the nation's electrical grid. In
addition to providing sold, stable returns, the stock also delivers an
impressive 8.5% dividend yield.
Legg
Mason Looks Poised to Rebound
Legg Mason (LM) has been one of the market's top-performing stocks,
returning an astounding +29% annually over the last ten years. A $10,000
investment made on August 31, 1996 would be worth $180,662 today -- a
cumulative gain of +1,706%. After watching the stock pull back sharply
from its 52-week high of $140 per share, we believe the time is right
for value investors to take a closer look at Legg Mason.
How
to Profit from Explosive Growth in China
In this report we'll bring you a closer look at several individual
Chinese stocks that are perfectly positioned to capitalize on
China's booming economy. Best of all, each and every one of these
stocks also trades on one of the major U.S. exchanges, making them
easy for U.S. investors to buy and sell. By the time you
finish reading this report, you'll be in much better position to
grab your share of the profits from the world's fastest-growing
economy. |
Searching
for Bargains in the Alcoholic Beverage Industry
All things considered, the major producers of wine and spirits have
many reasons to smile. Chances are virtually nil that consumers around
the world will suddenly lose their thirst for alcoholic beverages, so
demand for their high-margin products is all but guaranteed. With this
in mind, conservative investors who are drawn to steady, predictable
revenues and cash flows might want to sample something from the
alcoholic-beverage group.
The
Importance of Investing in Shareholder-Friendly Companies
Poor accounting and financial transparency can be devastating for
shareholders. For example, Enron went bankrupt after revealing more than
a billion dollars in losses held in off-balance sheet financing
vehicles. Fortunately, the concept of corporate stewardship cuts both
ways -- companies with a history of aligning their interests with those
of shareholders routinely outperform their peers.
A
Closer Look at the Satellite Radio Industry
2001 marked the first year commercial satellite radio broadcasts
became available in the U.S. At the end of last year, less than five
years after that first broadcast, there were already nearly 12 million
satellite radio subscribers in the U.S. alone. And satellite radio has
already been introduced in Canada -- Europe and Asia aren't far behind.
But this is only the beginning . . .

Why
Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs) Belong in Your Portfolio
What Makes MLPs so Attractive? It may have something to do
with their enticing yields of up to 11%. Then again, it could be their
market-beating annual returns of +17% since 1996. Or maybe it's their
exceptional track record for raising dividends an average of +8% to +9%
a year for the past ten years that has endeared them to income
investors.
Activision
(ATVI) and Other Video Game Makers Look Poised to Rebound Ahead of New
Console Releases
Shares of video game publisher Activision have surged +15% over the
past month, helped by a solid quarterly earnings release and concrete
signs of a re-acceleration of growth for the gaming industry.
Moody's
(MCO) Looks Like a Bargain
Moody's continues to deliver outstanding results. Along with its
recently quarterly earnings release, Moody's also lifted its full-year
guidance. Investors applauded the upbeat forecast, and the shares have
rallied nicely in recent weeks. However, this credit ratings juggernaut
still looks to trading well below its fair value.

Municipal
Bond Funds with Taxable Equivalent Yields of 10.8%
Municipal bonds are among the safest bonds around -- about as safe
as Treasuries. Over the past three decades, their default rate has been
only 0.04% versus 9.8% for corporate bonds, according to credit rating
agency Moody's. And with muni funds offering 10.8% yields, many
investors are looking closely at this asset class.

Shipping Stocks with Yields of up to 14.4%
With the increase in global trade, some shipping stocks are seeing
their daily revenues skyrocket. We think that this trend may last for
awhile, and cargo carriers offer you a way to profit from this increased

Lock
in Yields of 8.7% with Shares of this Healthcare REIT
Medical Properties is firing on all cylinders. The company recently
upped its quarterly dividend a generous +19% to 25 cents per share,
which equates to $1.00 annually. Its aggressive acquisition and
development plans should fuel earnings and drive dividend growth.
Shares
of Wrigley (WWY) Look Like a Bargain
Given the turbulent state of the markets, we have advocated
defensive, blue-chip stocks numerous times over the past several months.
One in particular that has caught our eye recently is Wrigley
(WWY, $43.57) -- a proven leader that hasn't missed an annual dividend
payment in nearly a century.
How
to Capitalize on the Booming Market for Ethanol and other Alternative
Fuels
As the price of gasoline goes higher, so too does the incentive to
use alternative fuels. As such, ethanol plays have been booming as
investors look toward the high-growth industry. We'll show you how to
gain profits from this attractive corner of the market.
Blue-Chip
Stocks Should Outperform in Today's Volatile Market
One of the best ways to position your assets in a volatile market is
to anchor your portfolio with the safest stocks the market has to offer
-- dividend-paying blue-chips. There are many reasons to seek shelter in
these safe havens when times get tough...
Weatherproof
Your Portfolio with Dividend-Paying Stocks
The jury is still out if the market is just in a short-term
correction or the start of a bear market. However, one thing is certain
-- given the increasing volatility, income investors would be wise to
weatherproof their portfolios with dividend-paying stocks that can stand
their ground when the going gets tough.

Searching
for Buffett-Like Stocks
Given his extensive track record of above-average investing
performance, it's not surprising then that millions of investors around
the world attempt to mimic Buffett's unique value-oriented approach. My
staff and I ran a search for firms that meet many of Warren Buffett's
stringent investment requirements. We recently searched through our
universe of nearly 10,000 stocks to find companies that Buffett himself
would be proud of.
Value
Investing Opportunity: Timberland (TBL)
With shares of Timberland (TBL) having tumbled from a high of $41
down to recent lows in the mid-$20s, the stock could make an excellent
value play at current levels. Here's a closer look at why we believe
Timberland is likely to rebound off its recent lows . . .
Market
Update for Value Investors
If the next bear market does arrive, it is important to be prepared
for greater volatility. However, we are not suggesting that you need to
liquidate your holdings and hide the proceeds under a mattress until the
storm has passed -- only that you make your portfolio as watertight as
possible.
Capitalize
on Booming Growth in the Outdoor Advertising Industry
Billboards are ubiquitous in the U.S., located adjacent to highways, on
bus stops or attached to the sides of buildings in major cities. In
fact, in 2005 alone, advertisers spent more than $6.3 billion on outdoor
advertising. And outdoor ad spending has been growing steadily over the
past 35 years.
Invest
Like Warren Buffett
Knowing Buffett's investing approach is one thing -- putting it into
practice is a different matter entirely.
However, this is not to imply that Buffett's accumulated wisdom should
not be learned -- and applied. Following in his footsteps might not make
you a billionaire, but it could certainly help your portfolio hit a few
homeruns in the years ahead.
Mortgage
REITs with Yields of up to 16%
Investment gurus of all stripes have been sounding the alert that the
double-digit returns you've grown to expect from real estate investment
trusts (REITs) may be a thing of the past. Most of these analysts,
however, are overlooking one corner of the REIT universe that has been
left largely untouched in the recent run on REITs.
Industry
Profile: Grocery Retailers
Grocery retailers enjoy the safety of being in a very defensive
industry. No matter how bad the economy gets, it is unlikely that people
will stop shopping for the basic necessities these stores offer. This
article take a closer look at the major players in this industry and a
new niche in the market that it growing rapidly.

U.S.
Market Looks Ready for a Pullback
The U.S. markets have performed extremely well in recent years, with
the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq soaring +59.9% and +73.8%, respectively,
off their March 2003 lows. However, at this point I believe the overall
market could be due for an extended period of sideways or declining
trading action.
The
Importance of Share Buybacks
Corporate managers are charged with a straightforward task: to enhance
shareholder value. In many cases, creating value means introducing a new
product or taking steps to cut costs and overhead -- complex steps that
can take years to implement. But there's another more direct way to
boost shareholder value -- a method that's been used consistently by
America's most successful companies for decades. Investors who
understand this secret value-generation formula can quickly and easily
identify companies with the capability to generate impressive long-term
returns.
Capitalize
on the Real Estate Market by Investing in REITs
Although real estate investment trusts (REITs) are probably the last
group you'd expect to outperform in a rising interest rate environment,
the facts speak for themselves. As of a few weeks ago, the NAREIT ALL
REIT Index was up a robust +12.7% since the start of the year, well
ahead of the broad-based S&P 500's roughly +5% gains.
How
to Calculate a Stock's Actual Fair Value
When searching for undervalued companies, investors commonly rely on
the most tried-and-true financial measures: Price/Book, Price/Earnings,
Price/Cash Flow, etc. To be sure, such traditional valuation metrics can
be useful, but they only tell part of the story. What investors really
need is the stock's fair value. Only then can they tell if a stock is
trading at a discount.
Industry
Overview -- Gambling/Hotel Casinos
Occasionally, Lady Luck decides to smile on casino players, allowing
high-fives around the blackjack table, or screams of joy from a
fortunate slot player. At the end of the day, though, the vast majority
of the chips always manage to find their way back to the house's side of
the table. Rather than fighting the casino at its own game, we believe
investors should harness the power of its immutable mathematical
advantage within their own portfolios.

Earn
9.8% Dividend Yields by Investing in this Business Development Company
Launched in 2004, Apollo Investment Crop. (AINV, $18.50) is one of about
a dozen publicly-traded Business Development Companies (BDCs). AINV
provides loans and takes an equity stake in a wide variety of
businesses, ranging from warranty provider NEW Customer Service to
U-Haul parent Amerco. The company is on the fast track, with per share
earnings expected to more than triple this year and to continue growing
at a +10% clip next year.
The
Growing Importance of Institutional Ownership
It's extremely important for small investors to take the flow of
institutional funds into account when making investment decisions.
Institutions control vast investment dollars and the actions of
institutional players can have a profound effect on a stock's price
Lock

some very attractive bond funds with yields of up to 9.9%

Investing Idea: Oracle (ORCL)
Oracle is one of those rare companies that possesses both growth and
value attributes. Over the next year, the company is expected to post
solid top and bottom-line gains of +19% and +17%, respectively. Yet
despite these projections, the shares are trading at just 17 times this
year’s earnings -- rock-bottom for a software company.
More
Profitable Than Microsoft
While Microsoft is a truly iconic success story and its dominance is
rare, it’s not unique. A small cadre of companies -- most of which
operate under the radar screen of most investors -- actually enjoy many
of the same advantages that Microsoft has benefited from over the past
two decades.
March 2006
Grow
Wealthy DRIP by DRIP
You can pocket your dividend payments or plow them back into shares of a
company through its dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP). If you choose to
let your dividends grow drip by drip, then over time you'll be amazed at
how much wealth you can build for yourself. Money doesn't grow on trees,
but it sure does grow with a dividend reinvestment plan.

Investing Idea: Nutraceutical International (NUTR)
Nutraceutical is one of those unique companies that possess both growth
and value attributes. The stock was a highflier in 2001 and 2002,
posting back-to-back triple-digit percentage returns. However, the
shares have cooled off in recent years, and they are currently trading
about 50% below their five-year peak of $27.62. This discount looks
attractive considering NUTR's growth prospects.
Fifth
Third Bancorp (FITB) Looks like a Bargain
When searching for undervalued stocks, my staff and I are always on the
lookout for solid companies that are suffering from temporary concerns.
In the short term, the shares of such firms can get weighed down by
negative investor sentiment. However, patient investors will eventually
be rewarded when those near-term problems get resolved. One company that
fits this description well is Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB).
The
Best of Both Worlds -- High Yields and High Safety
I like a particular diversified fund that seeks to reduce its exposure
to individual country or stock risk. It does so by investing in over 500
different stocks from around the world. The fund is also yielding a
head-turning 9.9% right now. This fund offers a good balance between
high-yield and high-safety.
Searching
for Value in Online Travel Stocks
Convenient and cost-effective, it should come as little surprise that
the online travel industry has been on a tear in recent years. According
to Internet research firm Jupiter Research, online travel sales will
account for around 25% of all bookings in 2006 -- up from less than 15%
just three years ago. Finding an undervalued stock in this high-growth
industry could yield significant gains for investors.

Safe, Above-Average Income from your Investments Year after Year
If you're retired or depend on your investments to deliver a significant

following asset classes are a good place to start . . .

Profiting
from Mean Reversion
Studies have conclusively shown that when stock prices get

Investing Ideas for 2006 From Some of Today's Leading Financial Analysts
During a meeting with Steven Halpern, the editor of The
Money Show Digest, he reminded me of his annual Top Picks
report -- a special research brief that he has published every January
for the last 23 years. Each year he asks a select group of the
nation's leading advisors to select a favorite stock or two for the year
ahead, and he then compiles all of those profiles into his Top Picks
report. Here is how you can get your copy...

The
Importance of Dividends
In today's fast-paced investing world, speculators often look to make a
quick fortune on "the next Microsoft" or some other
fast-growing company that operates in an exciting new industry. However,
it would be shortsighted to focus entirely on volatile, unproven firms,
while overlooking the numerous benefits offered by well-established,
dividend-paying companies.

Investing Idea: National Home Health Care (NHHC)
After posting healthy double-digit top-line growth rates from 2000
to 2003, National Home experienced a modest drop in 2004. The slowdown
was short-lived, however, and revenues have been climbing steadily since
then. In fact, the company recently reported record first-quarter
revenues. Even so, the stock still trades at a heavy discount compared
to its peers.

Spotlight: For-Profit Education
Students aren't the only ones able to profit from a good education --
publicly traded for-profit universities in the U.S. also offer investors
a golden opportunity to cash in on this trend. Thanks to steady growth
in admissions and unusually high profit margins, for-profit education
providers have delivered exceptional revenue and earnings growth over
the past several years.
Telecom
Stocks with 8%+ Dividend Yields
The last time you phoned someone, I bet you didn't think you were
holding one of the highest-yielding investments in the palm of your
hand. Yes, the average high-dividend rural telecom stock in the Lehman

First
American (FAF) Still Looks Like a Bargain
Shares of First American Financial (FAF) have now gained more than +70%
since I recommended the stock to my Market
Advisor premium newsletter subscribers just a year-and-a-half
ago. But with a likely slowdown looming for the mortgage market, company
earnings are expected to decline this year, leading some investors to
wonder whether they should take profits on the stock. I'd suggest
holding on.
Six
Flags Skyrockets +40% In One Short Month
It has been an exhilarating ride for shareholders of amusement park
operator Six Flags (PKS) over the last few weeks. Under new leadership,
the company's goal is to adopt a more family-oriented approach and to
better leverage its valuable rights to Time Warner's (TWX) popular
Looney Tunes characters. Evidently, investors approve of this move.
Marine
Products (MPX) Looks Poised to Rebound
Despite a weaker fourth-quarter outlook, the company is still on track
to post full-year earnings of $0.66 per share, which would represent an
impressive +14% improvement over last year's total.
Looking
Overseas for Growth and High Dividend Yields
Last year, an unrelenting series of 13 rate hikes lifted the dollar
to its strongest point in four years and boosted the attractiveness of
dollar-denominated assets. This year, I expect to see the reverse side
of the coin.
Avoid
Common Investing Mistakes by Keeping Your Emotions in Check
Over the long haul, achieving market-beating returns requires not
only solid analytical skills, but also an even temperament. It has been
said that fear and greed rule the market, and any investor who allows
such emotions to dictate his or her decision-making process will soon
discover that they are an impossible handicap to overcome.

in the Slot Machine Industry
The slot machine industry is relatively concentrated in the hands of a
few well-established players. In this article, I offer a list of
the key players in the industry. And I'll highlight two of my favorite

Advice
to the Yield-Hungry: Check Out Payout Ratios
Yield-hungry investors are sometimes tempted to look no further than
a stock's current dividend yield. At first blush, a stock like
investment banker Kent (KENT, $2.45) with its 12.9% yield looks a lot
more enticing than one like one of my portfolio holdings -- Holly Energy
Partners (HEP, $36.89), which yields 6.4%. But looks can be deceiving...
